Today we visited one of Siracusa’s oldest and one of its newest Christian churches. The Madonna delle Lacrime (of tears) was built in the 1950’s after a certified local miracle in which a plaster relief of the virgin Mary started crying human tears. Just across the street is the ancient church of San Giovanni, said to be the place mentioned in the Bible where Paul came to preach to the Syracusans. Below it is a large network of catacombs from around the 4th century CE, carved from an earlier Greek aqueduct and used later as bomb shelters during WWII.
